Explosive salad garden corner

Limited on garden space, but still want to grow veggies from home? Just do it! Some will grow, some will die, some will get a little munched by your garden dwellers, but it’s definitely worth giving it a go, with the amazing reward of fresh home grown food.

An experimental bed this year from our small urban garden in West Sussex, we planted everything in this one small corner of the garden, which does get good sunlight and with the fruit tree and current bush offering good protection from the wind.

We did plant a few too many plants in here, but if are picking and eating them everyday in meals, it can be quite easy to keep on top of, until you decide to go away for a week and on your return, realise everything seemed to triple in size!

Plants included here:

  • Sorrel

  • Calendula

  • Kale

  • 2 varieties of lettuce

  • Tomatoes

  • Rocket

  • Spinach

  • Wild garlic

  • Black current bush

One helpful tip to point out is that the longer you leave your veg in the more likely they are to be eaten other garden dwellers, so make sure to be harvesting regularly, and salad leaves that lay for too long on the ground are the perfect hiding places for slugs and snails, who come out at night to feast on all the delicious garden goodies!

🌱 Handy tip:

The healthier your soil the healthier the organisms living in it will be and the healthier your plants will be.

As we live in a coastal area in West Sussex, the winds can be quite harsh, and days easily vary between beautiful sunny, calm days and then suddenly are hit with colder days and heavy winds. Several of the seeds and more fragile plants were grown indoors at varying interval before being planted outdoors, to ensure they were strong enough to survive, so garden and crop planning can help you stay organised and be prepared to get your plants in the ground at the correct time (for crop planning advice click here).
