The indoor greenhouse

Updated: Sep 20, 2021

Constructing the indoor greenhouse was this weeks task, hoping to give the best chance of survival and plenty of sunshine to our vegetables, as things are getting a bit more exciting here during week 2, we bought the greenhouse in good timing just before England went into COVID lockdown.

My plants are growing really well, although I have been moving them in and out of the spare bedroom into our dining room space (which has glass doors and get greats sunshine) to make sure they are receiving enough light to grow.

Although this process does take more than half an hour in total, bringing them out in the morning, watering them and then returning them to their bedroom at night to sleep.

Keep moving forward, strive for progress and don't be afraid to fail.

The silly greenhouse was not as simple as it seemed, there were so many different pieces, but we got there in the end! Tying the cover to the frame, putting it into position, near the large sunny window, but indoors, because the air outside was still really cold at this time, so my babies would not have survived well out in the cold. I laid a large tarpaulin beneath it to catch any dirt or splashes from watering as it might make a mess of the tiles.

🌱 Handy hint:

If you think you wont remember what plants are, label them all, you will be so glad you did!

You can see from the pictures below that we used a whole range of pots and containers to plant everything in, as we did not have any outdoor space to grow plants in while the garden was being renovated. The lettuce was planted in the long trough planter, although they are way too close, as they should be 30cm apart, but this would have to do for now. The same situation with the pack choi, where I used the tiny garden centre seedlings containers to separate out the pak choi and give them some space, but this is obviously too small for them. Not to worry I had a plan!

Thankfully a few friends and my parents had extra pots that they no longer wanted, which was an amazing stash of containers, 5L, 10L and 20L containers. My dad wrapped what he had, and posted it over to me, so at least there was hope ahead. When those pots arrive, these small plants which will be growing fast will be repotted into the bigger containers.

If it is your first time growing many vegetables, you have to accept that you simply don't know what to expect, especially if the plants can't be settled into the ground, and we are still learning the wind and sun patterns of our new garden space and which death trap corners to avoid.

This large orange pot above has the parsnips seedlings in,these will be very interesting to see if we actually get good size parsnips as they are a little too close and will require nutrient feeding if we want them to grow well in this limited space.

So for now, the greenhouse is set up in a position to get plenty of good light, protect the seedlings from the cold and we hope for the best.
