Planting preparation

Updated: Sep 20, 2021

My delivery came, who ever thought I would be so excited about pots for vegetables?! So this means one thing.....time to make more mess.

Most of the pots needed cleaning out first, then I prepared loads of towels on the floor, ready to make more mess, the weather was freezing outside, so inside was the best choice for this moment, plus I could then also have some music on while I am at it.

My home grown spring onions are doing so well here, these I grew from shop bought spring onions from just the roots on my windowsill, be sure to get your free guide on how to simply grow your own on your windowsill! (See the link at the end of this post.)

I decided to set aside weekends for gardening activities and specifically Sundays, so I can learn, research and prepare what I need to during the week, then I can have the whole day to get done all the tasks that need doing. This time it was repotting into my many new containers, so my babies can have the best chance in life to keep growing!

🌱 Handy hint:

Be prepared to just have fun, working with plants is very messy....so choose your area carefully & accept you will need to clean up afterwards

Trying to reduce the amount of mess I anticipated I would make, we had an orange gardening tub which was filled with compost from outside in the garden, then use the little spade for potting up once inside.

The larger pots we had were great for some plants and simply too large for others, so once again I had a container shortage issue, so another task I decided to tackle was to use cans which I had saved for a few of the smaller plants.

I knew that even though I was potting them into cans, that soon I would have to repot them again once the seedlings were older, so I knew I would have to have those larger containers ready for later on. From other gardening advice, it's not always advisable to repot a plant on too much so much, but this is an experiment and I can only hope for the best!

This task definitely took the entire day, cleaning pots, sorting sizes, repotting, and then making sure to water them straight away once you have repotted, and of course clearing up the mess ready to make dinner for the evening.

It's a great activity to take on, but you have to accept that looking after plants takes dedication and time, but it's one of the most enjoyable tasks. Watching them grow and hoping I'm doing the right thing! So I placed them all outside on the palettes I had prepared to give them water before taking them all in back to the bedroom before night.

One useful large/tall pot we had we planted out parsnips, with the best hope that they would actually grow in these. One concern was that the seedlings were planted quite close together, but as we are limited on space, this would have to do and we will see what happens.

One thing I made sure to do was to label all the plants, because as seedlings if you haven't grown these before, many of them look very similar, and easy to loose track of what we have. I simply used small sticky note papers and cellotape to mark up all my pots.
